Giovanni Panerai founded Officine Panerai in Florence 1860. By his grandson Guido's tenure, Panerai specialized in diving instruments and watches for the frogmen of the Italian Marina Militare. However, unable to meet increasingly-strenuous naval specifications, Officine Panerai began to release watches to the civilian market in the 1990s; enter Sly Stallone, whose affinity for the brand brought Officine Panerai to international attention.
Richemont acquired Officine Panerai in 1997.
The present watch features a case constructed from bulk metallic glass, which is the reason why “BMG TECH” is noted on the dial. Compared to steel, bulk metallic glass is three times stronger, more scratch resistant, lighter in weight, and more corrosion resistant.
